The bigger they are, the dumber...?

Lately scientists have found out, larger animals may need the same size brain because there is more body to control. A whale’s brain can weigh almost 20 pounds or 9kg, and can contain over 200 billion nerve cells. A human brain can contain 85 million nerve cells weighing between 2.75 pounds and 3.2 pounds. A honeybee’s brain weighs only 1 milligram and contains fewer than a million nerve cells.
Some increase in brain size does affect an animal’s capability for intelligence and behavior, many size differences only exist in a specific brain region. It’s mainly seen in animals that have more advanced senses, such as sight or hearing, exact movement. The authors suggest that “advanced” thinking requires a very limited number of nerve cells.

In conclusion, big animals aren’t as smart as the little ones. Big animals have big brains to move big parts; brain size has nothing to do with intelligence.

The Oasis Of Seas!

The Oasis of Seas, the biggest ship in the world is 5 times the size of the Titanic! It can hold up to 5,400 guests. The Oasis stands 20 stories high and is 1,180 feet long and Weighs 100,000 tons. Also it can fit easily through the Panama Canal. Rogue waves are rare, but can lead to major problems; they can soar 100 feet in the air, and are known to sink large cargo ships. Amazingly only 30 feet of the ship is under water, which is basically nothing compared to the ships height.

Some of the technologies involved in keeping this ship afloat are; displacement of an equal amount of water, and keep the ship stable without having a massive draft beneath the water, the designers created a wider hull.

Reporters asked Matthew Collette, assistant professor of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering at the University of Michigan questions like:
Should we expect an even larger ship any time soon?
"Whether this ship is the limit I don't know," Collette said. "Because the economy has kind of turned south since they signed the contract for this ship, I don't think anyone is going to challenge it for the record in the next three to four years."

After AMD:Intel's Next Big Battle!

Intel, The worlds largest computer chip maker anounced on November 12th that it would pay $1.25 billion to resolve allegations by Advanced micro devices(AMD) that its larger rival competes unfairly in the market for computer chips.

On one hand, the agreement lets Intel and AMD move past the conflict that's put the companies at legal loggerheads for years, and it may help Intel resolve ongoing antitrust tussles U.S. regulators, But a more important benefit of the agreementis that it letsIntel turn attention to what may become an even greater headachein the coming years: the challenge posed by ARM Holdings (ARM.L), maker of the technology used in chips running in a widening array of mobile devices, including the Apple iPhone.

Nokia Vs. Apple!

Recently, the cellphone company Nokia has filed a lawsuit against Apple because people are saying that the iPhone is violating 10 different patents owned by Nokia, the cellphone company. Nokia sayas that the technologies, ranging from speech coding to security to wireless data transmission have been included in every iPhone when they first came out.

The law suit states the issues faced by an old fashioned patentand trademark system trying feebly to adapt. theat which new technologies are developed has left things like patent & copyright law in the dust & exposed weaknesses in those systems which need to be corrected to me et the needs of the Internet era.

Coincidentally, this is the week that Apple relased its latest quarterly financial details which showed record Mac and iPhone sales driving record quarterly profit and helping apple stock to reach a new all-time high. Nokia may be hoping to both steal some of Apple's thunder and capitalize on the apperent influx of cash Apple has.

My Blog Response

In my science class we did a lab on plasticity. This lab included the following materials:
  • Water
  • A measuring cup (glass or plastic)
  • Cornstarch.

What we exactlly did in this lab is first, poured the cornstarch in the measuring cup. Next we poured in the water in the measuring cup. After that we played with the cornstarch, as i learned that if you keep rolling it into a ball with your hands it will stay as a solid but if you don't it will turn into a liquid and it will harden just like the earths core.

My personal reflection on this lab :
I realy think that the lab is really fun and it is very hands on. I personally think this the most fun lab that we have so far, the reason i say this is because when i was younger when we learned about earth we didnt do anything but watch a movie. But this time my science class watched a movie and did a lab on earth, the movie was ok but the lab was really fun.

My Blog Response

On Wednesday (5/27/09), me and my science class did a lab on on isostasy. In my opinion i think the lab is basically on how much weight can water hold before the object in it sinks and how far under it sinks. The materials we used in the lab are :

  • Two wooden blocks (one smaller, and one larger)
  • A small bin filled with water
  • Water (fill the bin half full)
  • 20 pennies.

First we filled the bin half full with water. Next put the smallest wooden block in the water. After that put three pennies on the wooden block. Then measure how far down the block goes under water.Next take the objects out and put in the Bigger wooden block in the water. Shortly after that put the smaller wooden block and all the pennies on the blocks then measure how far down the blocks and pennies and go under water.

My personal reflection on this lab :

I personally did like this lab but not as much as the other one though. The reason for that is this just doesnt seem that fun and exciting, i asy its not as exciting because there really nothing interesting in this lab. But dont get me wrong this lab was alright , just not as fun as the plastiscity lab.

Texying is good for you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

GR8 news for worried parents: frequent use of text abbreviations does not harm children's literacy - and may even improve it.

Concerns have been raised that an explosion in the use of "textisms" like "CUL8R" and "wot u doin 2nite?" could be damaging children's reading and spelling ability. To investigate, Beverly Plester and her colleagues at Coventry University in the UK asked 88 children aged 10 to 12 to write text messages describing 10 different scenarios. When they compared the number of textisms used to a separate study of the children's reading ability, they found that those who used more textisms were better readers.

But do textisms improve literacy, or do better readers use more textisms? The preliminary results of a follow-up study seem to suggest the former, Plester says. She believes that this is because textisms are phonetically based: "Phonological awareness has long been associated with good reading skills." Exposure to the written word in any form is also linked to improved literacy. "These kids are engaging with more written language and they're doing it for fun."

Sharks going Extinct!

Sharks have been called "terrors of the deep". With shark dangers off the coasts of the U.S., Japan South Africa, and Australia, marine biologists are rushing to the fishes' defense. but in the recents years these perilous predators have become a popular American entree.Supermarkets and restaurants were initially so hesitant to feature the fearsome fish that they marketed it under such pseudonyms as "flake" and "steakfish."To keep pace with demand, commercial shark catches in the U.S. jumped from less than 500 tons in 1980 to 7,144 tons in 1989. Last year, however, the catch was down an estimated 20%, reflecting diminished populations.

Bank Robbery in Brick Township! =*[

A couple of theifs robbed a bank in Brick Township just today.
For the third time in as many days -- and fifth time in a month -- a bank in Brick Township was robbed today.
The recent rash of heists in the Ocean County community has prompted police to beef up surveillance of banks as the institutions' employees are put on alert for suspicious activity.
"In conjunction with the FBI office in Monmouth County, we're going to step up enforcement and patrols," Mayor Stephen Acropolis said.
In the latest incident, a masked man entered the Investors Savings Bank on Brick Boulevard at 2:47 p.m. today and handed a teller a note demanding money. The man fled with an undisclosed amount of cash, Capt. John Rein said. He wore a black stocking over his head, dark glasses, a black scarf around his face, and jeans and brown boots.
Police searched the immediate area with a K-9 unit but were unable to locate the suspect. No weapon was threatened or shown during the robbery, Rein said.

The inauguration is when the next President of The United States of America is sworn in by the cheif Justice. But this time instead of having a caucasion president, we have an african amreican president. The president has to recite this: "I do solemnly swear that I will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States."

^The new president is Brack hussein Obama. He was born in Honolulu, Hawaii on the 4th of August in the year of 1961 .He went to Harvard Law School. He is married to Michelle Obama and has two daughters named Malia Ann Obama, and Natasha(sasha) Obama. Before he was elected he lived in Chicago, Illinois(private), but he currently lives in the white house!

During his campain, his main message was about bringing change to America. One of his slogans was "Yes We Can", which was about unitng as a country which can bring change.I have seen alot of Obama merchandise, but the 3 things that really caught my eye was first these pair of sneakers that say Change we can believe in on one sneaker and the other sneaker it said yes we can with a picture of him on both sneakers, secondly this shirt that says Barack the vote with a picture of him in the backround and a check as the r, lastly is picture that says : "Do you smell what Barack is cookin'?".

Honestly the reason i voted for Obama is for two reasons, one because he's black, two because i just don't like Hillary Clinton and john McCain. However most of the people i know voted for him because he's black and they think we've had enough white presidents and i agree with them.In conclusion either way he's still our president so people who dont like him all i have to say is : deal with it!
